Set in 1987 during the Cold War, after nuclear bombs were set off by the Soviet Union and the Americans.
The air got more radioactive but was still survivable, except for the regions close to where the bombs had been set off.
People fight for survival, some still follow the Soviet Union and the USA/NATO, others have become Survivors, who have turned down both sides.
Some animals have gone extinct due to the increased cold and long winters, many people have died from the impact of the bombs, and from the radioactivity.Births have gotten more complicated, many unhealthy born babies.
The Americans/NATO are at even higher war against the Soviet Union and its allies.

To get a better sight of what's going on and how you could bring in your OC, this page is here to help you with it. Here will be the important information about the Nuclear Winter, about how life would be, transport, what clothes would be fitting, etc. I have done some research and tried to keep it as realistic as possible.Nuclear Winter means that due to the nuclear bombs that were set off, the winters will be a lot colder and longer, making survival increasingly difficult. Radiation is higher in the air, the regions close to where the bombs went off are exposed to a high amount of radioactivity, which makes survival impossible. Animals will have died, as well as plants and crops. Looting food from there will be impossible, as it will be exposed to the radioactivity and could therefore kill the person consuming the food.Due to the increased cold (it could be from -10 up to -30 degrees Celsius, and in Russia it would be much colder), wearing warm clothes will be required. There will be no visible sun, therefore there will be no warmth coming from it, nor any light. Of course, there's still daylight, but you will never see the sun.Many species will have gone extinct due to the low temperatures, species that cannot survive in the cold. Species like arctic wolves, arctic foxes, ice bears, penguins, etc. can survive the cold and will not go extinct. It's important to note that they do not get as much food due to many species having gone extinct. Additionally, predators will have gone more aggressive and it's not entirely impossible that they will try and attack humans in order to survive and... Well, eat them.It's also important to note that many crops that can't survive cold temperatures, will not be able to grow. That means that there won't be much food to grow. However, underground crops are an option (you grow crops in a building, but you'd have to keep the crops warm).Vehicles will not be used, as it would be very difficult to drive around on pure ice with a car, or bicycle. Snowmobiles, sleds, dogsleds, etc. are available and can be used. There are also horse breeds (like Icelandic horses, or Norwegian Fjord, Shetland Pony, Yakutian Horse, ...) that can survive cold temperatures.

The Sovetskiy Ogon (Soviet Fire) is a faction of people from the Soviet Union, founded by Vikhor Zarov, who is the most dangerous man on Earth.
The faction are ultranationalists who are in love with the Soviet Union, but think that they can do more, who think that the West needs to be controlled by the Soviet Union.
They hate the West, especially America, and want to see the West burn.
They're dangerous people who all wear gas masks and hide their faces, but are known throughout the whole world. All of them are ruthless and have no love for non-Soviets.
They are the main reason for the Nuclear War, having set off the nuclear bombs.

The Survivors are a mix of Western and Eastern people who have survived the nuclear bombs and are trying to survive the nuclear winter that curses the whole world.

Mason Callan

Mason was born on January 24th, 1949, in Las Vegas, USA. He was born to a Marine and a nurse, who both loved their son very much.
Due to Mason being an only child, he often felt lonely at home, but he quickly made friends with the other children in his neighbourhood. When Mason was 17, he heard about the death of his father by the hands of the Soviets, which made him grow a strong hate for them.
Just a year later, Mason joined the Army and tried to step into his father's footsteps, wanting to make him proud even if he was dead. It wasn't hard for Mason to go higher in ranks, and by 1986, he had the title of a Captain.
When the nuclear bombs were set off in 1987, Mason lost a lot of friends and he himself almost died.
However, he survived and his hatred had grown even stronger. He wants to kill every Soviet he sees, good or bad.

Jack was born on August 7th, 1950, in Dundee, Scotland. He is the younger brother of two older sisters, Rosie and Olivia. Their mother, Elizabeth Wallace, was a teacher at a school where she taught history and religion. The father, James Wallace, was a pilot. They were a rather wealthy family, but money had never been something Jack was after.
At the age of 12, Jack's parents divorced after having declared that they did not love each other anymore, which left Jack with a mental scar. He lived with his father in Glasgow, while his sisters remained with their mother. He was close to his father, and enjoyed being around him.
When Jack was 17, he joined the military and struggled a lot at first. However, he was determined to get better and stay in the military, so he trained more and more, until he couldn't get better. His superiors were impressed with his determination and with his new talents, and offered him to join the Special Air Service. Proud of his accomplishments, Jack accepted the offer and became part of the SAS.
In 1987, when the nuclear bombs were set off, Captain Jack Wallace had lost almost everything in his life. He still had his family, but they were unable to stay alive for long. Jack survived the horrors that came upon his family, watching as the NATO did nothing to save the people.
He left everything behind and became a Survivor, helping wherever he could. He had no love for the NATO, nor for the Soviets. But he'd take care of people that needed help, no matter which side they were on.

Vikhor was born sometime in 1945, right after World War II. He was born to unknown Russian parents in Stalingrad, Russian SSR. Despite his parents loving Vikhor, they soon noticed Vikhor's troubled behaviour that he had developed as a child. Vikhor had always been quite sadistic and aggressive, which frightened his parents.
His parents sent him to a psychiatrist in order to help him, but it unfortunately only made him worse.
When Vikhor was 18, his parents saw no other way to "help" him, than to send him to a psychiatric facility - one that was for people that were traitors of the Soviet Union. His parents had lied to the Soviet Union, had told them that Vikhor was a threat to the government, and so he was put in a psychiatric facility, where he was tortured and broken. But that facility did not change him, it only made him worse, and he had gained some kind of influence in it. He was let out only five years later, the right side of his face scarred, and he returned to his parents in the home they had never left.
Feeling betrayed by his own parents, Vikhor killed them, and the Soviet Union did nothing to punish him for his crimes. No, they agreed with him.
Vikhor was allowed in into the military, where he pretended to have some kind of control over him. He managed to get into the Spetsnaz, climbing to the rank of Captain, then a Commander, until he was dishonourably discharged, after having attacked and killed his superiors. The Cold War opened opportunities for him, and for his plan he needed people. He created the Sovetskiy Ogon (Soviet Fire) in early 1984, preparing for the disaster he had planned. In 1987, he set off the nuclear bombs with the help of an American, John Lake, and caused a Nuclear Winter. Vikhor wanted to see the West suffer, wanted the Soviet Union to gain control. Or he himself would do it.

William was born on June 8th, 1952, in New York, USA. He was born to a lawyer and a musician, but they did not have much care for their son. They preferred William's older brother, Jacob, who seemed to be all their pride.
William grew up trying to make his parents proud, but they were only ever proud of Jacob. At some point in his life, William witnessed his brother's death by the hands of some criminals, and William had not been able to save his brother from bleeding out. His parents were distraught and moved away, leaving William.
This event left William scarred, but he was determined to learn how to save lives. He became a Doctor, and helped where he could - until one day, one of his patients was his father. With great effort, William had managed to save his father's life, finally gaining the praise and pride he had longed for for so long. William travelled to Finland where he met a Soviet woman, Ana Pazarova, whom he became close friends with. She made her see that not everyone in the Soviet Union was bad, and he made her see that not everyone in the NATO and America were bad. They worked together for a long time, until Ana had to return to Russia. When the nuclear bombs went off in 1987, William lost both his parents from the high radiation. His brother, too, had been exposed to too much radiation and died. After finding out that Ana had died to American bombs, William's heart was shattered. Knowing he could not return to America without feeling hatred, he became a Survivor who would help both sides. He'd help where he could, whilst trying his best to survive himself - and keep his parents proud of him, even in death.

Not much is known about Yevgeny's early life, as it had all been removed by the KGB. He was born in 1944, to unknown parents somewhere in the Soviet Union. When he was 18 he joined the Soviet Army, and climbed ranks until he managed to get into the Spetsnaz, where he became a Colonel. After years of being a soldier in the Spetsnaz, Yevgeny was offered a place within the KGB, but he rejected the offer at first. However, after the nuclear bombs were set off in 1987, he finally accepted the offer and became a KGB officer. His main goal was to find people that could bring him closer to the man responsible for the Nuclear Winter everyone had to suffer through - and he would use his power that he got from the KGB in order to find that man.

Alex was born on January 21st, 1951, in Birmingham, England. He was born to an actress and a SAS soldier. He grew up quite happily with his parents in Birmingham, and Alex was a quite positive person in general. One day his father was killed by the Soviets, which broke Alex, since he had been very close to his father.
He and his mother protected each other, and in order to protect her even further, Alex joined the military at the age of 19. He was determined to become one of the best in order to keep her mother protected, and even made her proud when he managed to get into the SAS, following his father's footsteps. However, that probably had been his greatest mistake.
With the rank of a Sergeant, Alex was sent to enemy territory with his squad, where they'd have to infiltrate a Soviet occupied building. Unfortunately, they had a Soviet spy amongst them, who sold them out to the Soviets. Alex and his squad were shot and left to die, but Alex had managed to survive.
The world thought he was dead, especially as those nuclear bombs were set off while he was trying to recover in an abandoned building. Letting the world think he was dead, Alex joined the Survivors and tried his best to stay alive.
He hated the Soviet Union, he hated the Soviets.
That could not be changed - or could it?

John was born on November 9th, 1950, in Chicago, USA. He was born into a wealthy family, though his father left before John could even remember his face. He grew up with his mother, in the quite expensive house they owned.
John preferred to be the one to make the decisions, whether he spoke to his superiors or not. He was hungry for power and control.
When he was 18, he joined the military with the ambitious thought of become the best of the best, and that was what he had always tried to go for.
John was impatient, but he knew that it would take time to climb the ranks, so he worked hard every single day. Eventually, he made it into the USMC and with more time, he became a Lieutenant-Colonel, something he was proud of.
But he wanted more for his country and for himself, he wanted to be known as a hero. So, he planned. He planned with Vikhor Zarov, to set off those nuclear bombs.
However, Vikhor had deceived him, had told him that he hated the Soviet Union and wanted to help John with getting America to win the fight against the Soviet Union.
That, however, was a lie - and John had believed it.
The nuclear bombs were set off, which killed his mother. Did he care? Perhaps a little. In the end, she had always been the person who loved him. Did he regret it? No.
John's hatred towards Vikhor and the Soviet Union had grown stronger, but he knew that he could not do much. Except for if he had the right weapon.

Anna was born in March, 1958, to a Polish father and a German mother in Kalisz, Poland. She had a older brother, Jakob, and lived happily with her family in a comfortable family house just outside the city.
Growing up, Anna loved to be kind to people, loved to help them, loved to befriend them. She was a very happy person in general, and loved to show it to others.
Anna had always been interested in the work her aunt had been doing, working as an intelligence agent. It inspired Anna, made her want to become one as well one day.
Her parents bought her toys with which she could pretend to be an agent, until her father made that dream of hers possible for her.
She became an intelligence agent for the NATO, one that was quite talented and knew what she was doing.
She loved her work, loved the people she worked with, but she had Vikhor Zarev, and what he had done to the world.
She held no grudges against the Soviets, as she knew that not all were bad, not all were as cruel as Vikhor.
She helped wherever she could, whilst desperately trying to find and kill Vikhor, even if her orders were to capture him. No, Vikhor had killed too many lives, he could not be left alive.

Elene was born May 27th, 1959, somewhere in Georgia during the Soviet Union. She grew up with only her father, as her mother had died giving birth to her. This made her father resent her, for taking the love of his life from him.
Anna's father often came home drunk, but even if he resented his daughter, he never hurt her. He never would.
If anyone dared to hurt her, he would hurt that person. In some way, he did love her, but he still made her life like hell by telling her how she killed her own mother.
Elene loved her father, even if he was not kind to her. In the end, he was still her family, the only one she had.
Elene grew up with the beliefs that the Soviet Union were superior to anything and anyone else, that they deserved the power they had, that they deserved to have to so much more. She believed the same, and said that she'd help them gain more power.
What she said was true, she did try to help, by making contact with Vikhor Zarov, helping him however she could.
She was proud as the nuclear bombs had been set off, knowing that she had taken part of it.
Now, she only needed to wait for the Soviet Union to take that opportunity and rise to much greater power.

Almost nothing is known about Michael, who prefers to be a rather mysterious man. He prefers his life to be a secret, he prefers to protect his family - if he has one. No one knows it, no one can prove it. No one even knows if Michael Challace is his actual name, or if it's just a name he had adopted, in order to keep himself a secret.
It was believed that Michael once had a son, but that could have been a rumour, because people got bored and wanted to know at least something about Michael.
He was a Lieutenant in the Army, never having wanted to join the Marines. No, he rejected the offer to join them, he just didn't feel like joining. He never gave a true reason for it.
When the nuclear bombs were set off in 1987, Michael could only watch from his basement where he had taken shelter, where he was stuck for weeks.
Luckily, he always stored food and water in the basement, so he could survive well. He was later on found by a few mates of his, who gave him a gas mask and a suit so he could survive the radioactivity outside.

Logan was born on September 16th, 1949, in Washington D.C, USA. His parents were both in the military, but his father had retired due suffering from too much PTSD, and constantly suffering from it. Logan always tried to help his father, and that made his father love him even more.
When Logan was 17, he joined the Army to step into his parents' footsteps, but he wasn't the best at first. His talents were mostly with communication, his words always doing wonders. That was not unseen by his superiors, who saw it as a great advantage.
Logan was taught to speak Russian fluently and accent-free by his father and superiors, making him a perfect spy.
They sent him to the Soviet Union where he'd spy on them, acting like he was one of them, but soon the tables turned.
Logan started to become obsessed with the ideologies of the Soviet Union and turned to their side, giving them information about the US and NATO.
Now working as a spy for the Soviet Union, Logan returned to America to remove potential threats for the Soviets, doing tasks for them, and informing them about every step.
When the nuclear bombs were set off, Logan managed to find cover to protect himself from the bombs and the radioactivity, however his parents didn't.
It did pain him, but there was no time for grieving.
More doors had opened, and Logan had a lot of potential money on his doorstep.

Nina was born on October 4th, 1953 in Kyiv, Ukraine. She was the second oldest child of Irina and Vasyl Oliinyk. In her childhood, Nina had always disliked the West, especially America. Half her family was in the KGB, but she herself never had a wish to join them, so she went after her dream and became a physicist. It had not been easy for her to become a physicist, as many people told her that a woman couldn't accomplish what she wanted.
In 1979, she met a man named Vikhor Zarov, with whom she became friends with, after having talked a few more times.
Vikhor was interested in physics, learning a lot from Nina, who gave him private lessons.
Eventually, Vikhor told her what he was planning, and Nina found a new purpose. She agreed to help him, knowing she could be a big help with her knowledge.
She joined his Sovetskiy Ogon and planned with Vikhor together, until the day finally came where the nuclear bombs were set off, and a new era for humanity began.
Despite being proud of what she had accomplished in her life, her parents cast her out and told her to never return, to never try to look for them.
Being under Vikhor's manipulations, Nina searched for her parents and killed them, feeling no remorse whatsoever.

Andrei was born sometime in 1952, in Solovetsky, Russia. He was adopted by a family after his parents abandoned him, didn't even leave a note or anything for him. His new family took good care of him, loving him as if he was their own son. But unfortunately, Andrei never thought the same.
Growing up, Andrei came to dislike his adoptive family, saying that they weren't what he wanted to have.
He still protected them, kept them safe from harm, but he couldn't get himself to like them, no matter how hard they tried, no matter how hard he tried.
When he was 18, Andrei joined the Soviet Army and eventually the KGB as well. He was known for his brutality in interrogations, but that didn't mean that they weren't effective. He had locked up at least 15 people in psikhushkas (Soviet psychiatric hospitals that were considered a form of torture), and had gotten well known throughout the Soviet Union for his constant success in interrogations. But that wasn't enough for him.
At some point in his life, Andrei met Vikhor Zarov, who offered him a place in the Sovetskiy Ogon, telling him about their great plan.
Without hesitation Andrei accepted and helped Vikhor to set off those nuclear bombs, that caused a Nuclear Winter throughout the whole world.

YURY SOKOLOV

Yury was born on February 19th, 1946, in Leningrad, Russia. Not much is known about his childhood, as he prefers to keep his past concealed. It was most likely a troubled past, but no one really knew. The only person who knew was Yury's brother, but no one had ever seen him after 1979, the year where Yury joined the Sovetskiy Ogon.
It was believed that Yury had once been part of the Spetsnaz, a very intelligent and strategic Captain who hated failures, but he preferred to keep his squad alive.
When Yury joined the Sovetsky Ogon, he was deceived by Vikhor, who told him it was only to strengthen the Soviet Union, to make sure that the West would not set off their bombs. For a long time Yury believed him, until he found out the truth. A horrid truth.
Vikhor had declared Yury a threat to the Soviet Union and made sure he was put into a psikhushka (Soviet psychiatric hospital, that were considered a form of torture), where he suffered for a long time. He was subjected to "treatments" such as insulin shock therapy, forced isolation, sensory deprivation, humiliation, and high doses of psychotropic drugs. Psychological abuse through interrogations were also applied.
From the psikhushka Yury had to witness how the nuclear bombs were set off, how he could not stop Vikhor.
He was driven by guilt, anger, and hatred, wanting nothing more than to put a bullet through Vikhor's head.
Yury was released from the psikhushka after years of torture, but he had nowhere to go. His home had been blown up, his family - if he had any - was gone as well.
So, Yury became a Survivor, gathering people that followed him, becoming a Commander of a group of Survivors.
But the memories of the torture he had suffered would never fade, neither would his hate for Vikhor, nor his dislike for the West, that had always remained.

Neil was born on December 29th, 1948, in Texas, USA. He was born into a rather wealthy family, but he never truly cared about the money. He had a good childhood, he loved doing sports, loved going outside, but his greatest interest was with the military. His dream.
As soon as Neil was 17, he joined the military and trained hard every single day. He was a hardworking, determined man who wanted nothing more than to make his country proud.
With the years, Neil climbed up the ranks and was offered the position of a Commander. Without hesitation, he accepted and commanded a lot of squads.
When the name Vikhor Zarov became known to him, it was already too late to try and catch him.
The nuclear bombs were set off, and Neil lost over a hundred men that day, something that would haunt him until the end of his days. He felt like it was his fault, that he had not taken good care of his soldiers, that he failed them and the military.
Driven by guilt and grief, Neil left the military and joined the Survivors, where he was allowed to keep his rank as Commander that he had worked on for years.
He hoped to make amends, he hoped to survive, he hoped to protect those that needed help, that needed a shelter.
There was no hate for the Soviets, he had met Soviets that were good, that saved his life a few times.
But he needed Vikhor Zarov dead, he wanted to make him pay for what he did. That might be a bigger challenge than surviving the Nuclear Winter.
